Our Story
Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Psalm 146: 1-2.
A little over four years ago, as an ex-soccer mom, I found myself lost and lonely in the face of empty nest. Soul-searching questions like, “What in the world am I going to do for the rest of my life,” prompted this usually shy Southern girl to take a leap of part faith and part middle-aged craziness and launch a Christian magazine in the Jackson area. I had no idea that such a decision would change my life forever.
I fell in love with my career. I fell in love with the people I met. And what is more important – I fell in love with the Lord in a deeper and richer way than I ever dreamed was possible. However, as editor of that magazine, I was an affiliate, working in association with a larger company who has since begun selling franchises. With franchising come expectations of uniformity and less opportunity to adapt and change something just because I felt strongly that my idea would work in my market. Uniformity is just not my M.O. Just ask anyone in my family. I can’t remember from one day to the next where I keep the checkbook, the cat food, or my favorite coffee cup. I never do anything the same way twice. After all, variety is the spice of life to me!
This new completely independent venture is the result of lots of prayer, lots of “God going before me,” and a response to the letters and e-mails I have gotten from you over the years. I may have jumped into the magazine business out of a self-serving need to find something meaningful to do post-mothering, but something happened to me along the way. This time it is less middle-aged craziness and far more faith and discernment. And over the course of the ups and downs and changes in my life over the past four years, I have learned a thing or two about trusting the Lord in real ways.
Here at a juncture in life where I am both beginning a new magazine and beginning a battle with a new illness called breast cancer, I am confident that God always does His best work in the most challenging of situations. The lyrics to the number one Sunday School favorite of yesteryear echo in my brain. “Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong. They are weak, but He is strong.” I have thus far found that to be quite true. One thing I’ve noticed about God – as infinite and unfathomable as He may be, He makes the most important principles of the Christian faith simple enough that a child can understand them and deep enough that an adult can find comfort in them in the midst of a storm.
I hope you share my excitement as Metro Christian Living® introduces itself to you this month. You will enjoy reading about the Miskelly family, their small town roots, and patriarch Mr. Howard Miskelly’s strong faith. You will notice that we are eager to hear your comments in A View from You. Check out our Quips and Quotes and send us yours as well. I hope we can make you laugh, cry, think and reflect as you read cover to cover. The numerous articles on breast cancer are not last minute thoughts based on my present situation. You will just have to read on to find out the amazing story of how the idea of a breast cancer series actually led to my own early diagnosis.
Read everything and let us know what you think. E-mail and my laptop are my new best friends since my doctors scripted my recovery on their terms. I really race to open my e-mail every morning. In the middle of the tough stuff of life, I hope we will always encourage each other.
If there is a word that most defines our mission in this new magazine, it is ‘authentic.’ We want to present authentic faith in such a way that you are thirsty for more of it. We want to discuss authentic issues and offer solutions and ideas based on God’s Word. We want to lift up the authentic Savior who bears our burdens and walks alongside us in the marketplace each and everyday. And when you get to the final page of the magazine, we hope you feel like you have had a heart to heart visit with a few authentic friends.

“The Bible is the love story of God with His people. God calls, pursues, forgives, and heals.
Our response to His love is itself His gift.”

The Ragamuffin Gospel
Providing a platform for others to share their stories creates a ripple effect as one encourages another, and as the Bible says, “…so iron sharpens iron.” There is also a peace and a freedom that come when people are able to let down their guard and be real with each other by sharing the joys and sorrows that weave the tapestry of life. We comfort and encourage – and we connect at the heart and soul level. It is my sincere hope that our readers sense something genuine and uplifting each time they pick up a Metro Christian Living® magazine.
